AUSTELL VAULT
The Historic Oakland Foundation commissioned LPC to conduct a conditions assessment for the 1883 Austell Vault located at the highest point within Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. Originating from eastern Tennessee, Alfred Austell and his wife, Francina Cameron, moved to Atlanta in 1858. General Austell founded Atlanta National Bank and Atlanta Savings Bank, which later was merged with larger banks. Austell is also known for his efforts of bringing major railroads to the South to further his associations in the cotton business. Upon retiring in 1870, Austell turned his interests over to his son-in-law, James Swann, who is also entombed within the Vault. The vault was designed to accommodate thirty burials, to date, it houses twenty-one burials of the Austell family and descendants.
An assessment of the site, exterior, and interior revealed several instances of mortar deterioration, atmospheric grime on the marble and granite, and improper previous repairs. LPC provided restoration and maintenance recommendations address the documented deficiencies and arrest any further degradation of historic materials and ensure the longevity of the vault.
