BULL SWAMP SCHOOL
Bull Swamp Baptist Church commissioned Landmark Preservation LLC (Landmark) to conduct a conditions assessment of the Bull Swamp School located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Influenced from the Rosenwald Community School Plan #20 (Two Teacher, Facing East or West only), the school was originally built for rural African American students circa 1930. The purpose of this assessment is to identify building deficiencies and to make recommendations for future rehabilitation. It focuses not on restoring the building to a period of significance or to a particular time period, but on rehabilitating the building for its continued use. At this time, the Bull Street School is proposed to become a community event center to support the adjacent Bull Street Baptist Church with a new construction addition to facilitate accessible restrooms, a catering kitchen and dining space. The Church is also in the process of researching and completing a National Register Nomination application.
