CITY OF SAVANNAH - MONUMENTS ASSESSMENT
The City of Savannah engaged Landmark Preservation, LLC (Landmark) to perform a thorough assessment of the city’s fifty-seven monuments and to create an overall conditions assessment for the preservation and maintenance of the monuments. The purpose of the assessment was to identify the deficiencies of each monument, to recommend treatments in order to remedy those deficiencies, and to define long-term preservation maintenance once all deficiencies have been addressed. The overall goal is to place all the monuments into a regular maintenance cycle.
The monuments were ranked based on their condition at the time the assessment was written. Each monument was given a priority ranking between 1 and 3. Priority 1 monuments are in the best condition and require little to no work before being placed on a maintenance cycle. Priority 2 monuments will require a moderate amount of work. Priority 3 monuments will require extensive work to address deficiencies and will require planning before any work is carried out. Although a Priority 1 monument should be addressed first, regular maintenance should be conducted on all monuments regardless of priority levels to address and limit future deterioration.
